“Real religion should be something that liberates men. But churches don’t want free men who can think for themself and find their own divinity within. When a religion becomes organized it is no longer a religious experience but only superstition and estrangement.”
~ Federico Fellini ~

while i do think it is healthy (and a must) to have some sort of spiritual background in one's life, be it a religion, or some sort of mixture of beliefs, i dislike the idea of having someone telling other people what/how/when to believe (in), and what/whom to worship.
ReplyDeletei think i am fortunate to have never experienced such actions agains the notion of free religion.
I think we understand each other here. Religion is also a basis for power plays, as history well shows, which are acted out in many layers of society. Keeping the population dumb is one of them, vilifying "enemies" is another.
DeleteFor my part, I prefer to keep my mind and my options open, I don't usually accept given wisdom at face value and tend to be pretty sceptical. It's served me well, mostly. ;-)
agree :)
ReplyDeletei have studied lots of beliefs (well, no study tours to India, Tibet, Peru or such, but books..., only books and the internet...) and have picked this one here, that one there. compiling and condensating my own personal religion. and i feel comfortable with it :)
I spent most of my younger years being straight-jacketed into the accepted scheme of things, religion included, which I intuitively felst was empty and meaningless for me, from an early age on. Since then I've been filling in the gaps in a way that is personally useful for me. I think that any religious experience ultimately comes down to how one's belief interfaces with one's own life situation.
Deletea constant feedback loop is essential or one might end up blindfolded, mislead into some faith that has little or nothing to do with one's experiences - these situations are not far away from having no faith at all.

Yes, and this is where power politics enter the arena. Keeping people blind and ignorant is the dream of anybody who craves control.
